We are seeking an experienced Chief Estimator for our Edmonton, AB Head Office reporting to the Construction Manager. The ideal candidate has a strong background in commercial construction estimating.


Prepare budgets and estimates for construction of commercial and institutional projects; prepare bids for civil and concrete work on industrial projects. Lead the pre-construction team for the company through the design process, starting from the schematic design all the way to construction drawings and documents while establishing and maintaining budget parameters.


  • Supervise, lead & mentor a team of two or more Estimators, this includes conducting performance reviews, mapping career paths and determining the professional development and training requirements of the team
  • Identifying strengths and weaknesses in others, working with those people to achieve project and individual success
  • Manage the whole bidding process from time of plan receipt to proposal submission to the owner
  • Complete pricing of concrete for the project based on quantities and in conjunction with specific requirements
  • Allocate productivities to quantities based on difficulty, keeping in view the historical data to establish man-hour needs for the project
  • Estimate indirect (soft) costs and other related costs for all projects based on the type of agreement
  • Review proposed project logistics especially crane locations to ensure optimal coverage of the site including anticipation of issues for dismantling
  • Establish schedule durations for our scope of work to determine appropriate general conditions
  • Analyze and review concrete durations within the project master schedule to ensure realistic timing for completion of our scope which is always on critical path
  • First point of contact in the company for almost all clients to answer their inquiries about bid and negotiating pricing
  • Review client contracts before signing to determine if the conditions of the contract are according to the bid submitted as well as making sure that the contract does not include any conditions that might be detrimental to the company during or after the execution of work.
  • Communicate with the consultants and the sub-contractors to establish proper project requirements. This entails understanding ownership needs and the feasibility of these requirements from the subcontracts point of view.
  • Developed relationships with key subcontractors to assure there is compatibility in approach and services with regard to their deliverables and performance
  • Supervise take-offs and price to guide through schematic design, development and guaranteed maximum price
  • Supervise analysis of the cost impact of additions to or deletions from a construction project in response to ownership inquiries
  • Prepare detailed subcontractor scope of work bid packages
  • Supervise quantity take-off from contract construction drawings and specifications to analyze bids from subcontractors

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 10 + years of progressive estimating experience required in commercial, residential and mixed use high rise building construction preferred
  • Experience with budgets up to $100, 000, 000.00
  • Excellent time management, problem solving, communication and people skills
  • A solid understanding of all construction trades and construction techniques
  • Strong management, delegation, planning and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of local, provincial and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances and legislation
  • Highly flexible with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively and independently in a diverse busy working environment
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically and professionally at all times
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft computer software such as Excel, Word and Outlook

Educational Requirements

A related post-secondary degree or diploma in construction engineering and/or equivalent levels of education and experience.

Working Conditions

Family owned and operated. Fast-paced construction environment. The work routine can be marked by intense work periods.The majority of the time will be spent in an office environment where sitting for long periods of time can occur, with occasional visits to the field. Meetings will be required with the senior management team, within the position’s own department/function, and with client/owners to address planning and ongoing work-related issues. 

Job stressors include multiple deadlines, shifting priorities, and working under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
